Night Out in Taipei

Email and the Internet have come to our little abode! It's very exciting to finally be able to email you without going to some grungy and dirty internet cafe, full of smoking online gaming addicts.

Things are going well here. This evening we went to a performance of traditional Chinese music, which was mostly instrumental but included a little bit of singing and dancing. My sister and I both enjoyed it very much. They have violin-type, xylophone-type and wind-type instruments, as well as flutes, drums, and cymbals, but the instruments are all quite different from Western ones and definitely sound different. They use a different scale too, so that the music sounds somewhat dissonant or atonal to Western ears. B likened it to screeching cats (he was not a fan).

We ate dinner out. Tonight we went to a very common type of Taiwanese restaurant, the independently owned fast food restaurant. They all have cheap Chinese food, like potstickers and noodles, fluorescent lighting, blaring TVs and no napkins or tablecloths but plenty of condiments (usually at least four: vinegar, soy sauce, hot sauce and fish sauce). It was greasy but delicious.
