I arrived in Shanghai a few days ago and we now have a permanent address (at least for the next month, until Sept. 16th) and a cell phone.
We are staying at the Celebrity Service Apartment. This means it has a kitchen and so on, but is in a hotel and also has maid service twice a week. This is the only way to rent an apartment for a short time, but actually it's not so expensive (about $50/day which is covered by B's grant). It's very nice.
Shanghai itself is very crowded, modern in spots (and not-so-modern in others) and full of interesting things to see and do.
