Honeymoon: Nanjing

B and I left Shanghai on the 16th, and went to Hangzhou, and now Nanjing. Nanjing means "Southern Capital" and served as the capital most recently under the Kuomingtang (the Republic of China government that fled to Taiwan in 1949 when the Communists took over). It is a mostly modern city (having been leveled by the Japanese during WWII in the infamous Rape of Nanking) but has many excellent museums, some old or reconstructed buildings (including the examination halls where the scholars who ran the country for most of China's history were selected by examination), and is quite charming.

We are leaving today on the overnight train to Beijing, where we will fly out to the United States.
